Photostory Friday - Basket Case

Today My Mom, sister Vicki, and I all got together to finish our cakes. At class we were only able to finish our basket weave frosting and borders.

We had already made the royal icing flowers in the previous three weeks. So all we had to do today, was assemble our masterpieces!

This is Mom's. Her's had these lovely sprays of mixed flowers around the sides.

This is Vicki's gorgeous cake.

This is my supercool cake. My cute birds broke :(

It just has two larger sprays along with the little picket fence garden.

We didn't bake this session at all. For these final cakes we used royal icing over styrofoam blanks, so that we can keep our beautiful cakes and display them on our lovely footed cake stands. Mine will reside in my china cabinet for the next four or five years. It will replace this one...

from the first time I took this class. It was white buttercream when I originally made it and has mellowed to an antique cream. Not bad for four years of decoration!

I made a joint cake for my twin boys' first birthday and I thought my hand was going to fall off! My mom had to finish it up for me. (you can see part of it here http://sjyoungblood.blogspot.com/2008/01/happy-birthday.html)
Do you use real icing? It lasts for 4-5 years? If that's true it's kinda scary that we eat that...not that that would stop me!

We had tons of fun taking cake classes together. We took classes at Michael's at Tempe Marketplace from teacher - Brad McIntire. He is an awesome teacher and super talented. Hopefully Jane will post her disected frog cake and her turntable cake again. They were outstanding!! She is so talented and creative! From her big sis, Vicki.

I googled wedding cakes and it took me to your blog. Your perfect pear wedding cake was just what we were looking for my brothers wedding. It turned out great--I am so glad you shared how you made it. I was just put in as the new enrichment leader in our ward and was happy to find ideas for that on your blog too. Just wanted to let you know that you have another reader in Idaho.
